Shanghai has traditionally had a strong tradition of theatre, with performances happening all over the city throughout the year.
Although the days of the burlesque types of performance are over, Shanghai still offers much in the way of performance and is a great way to soak up Shanghai Culture.
Venues
Shanghai Grand Theatre
Built on the site of the old racecourse, on what is now People's Square, this is the showpiece theatre for Shanghai. Featuring 3 theatres, it was built in 1998 with 1.2billion RMB investment. Often hosting perfomances by the BBC Orchestra, Swan Lake and traditional Chinese Opera, the Shanghai Grand Theatre is the must see venue in town.
Shanghai Culture Square
Located in the heart of the French Concession the Shanghai Culutre Square features ballet performances and musical theatre.
Shanghai Concert Hall
Close to People's Square, this grand old Concert Hall hosts a lot more Chinese focussed events, but it worth going to see its magnificant interior.
Lyceum Theatre
This small venue on Maoming Nan Lu was built in the 1930's and hosts smaller concerts.
