Drivers

Often many families who move to China will find that they have the services of a full time driver at their disposal.

This is seen as a more luxurious option - you do not have to wait for taxi's and your driver can take you all over the city. They will more than likely drive a 7 seater Buick people carrier with air conditioning. Many are ex-cabbies and know the roads in Shanghai perfectly. Before getting a driver, you should try and use all the transport options that Shanghai has to offer.

If you have your own car, you can hire a driver seperately for around 4000 - 6000 RMB per month. For hiring a driver with a car, the rate increases to around 10,000 to 12,000 RMB per month.

This is a good option if the children go to school in a different location from the rest of the family, and makes the school run a lot easier. Drivers can work at weekends, and evenings but will expect time off for Chinese New Year (February) and National holiday (beginning of October).

There are a number of agencies in Shanghai that you can go through to find a driver, a couple of reputable ones are listed below.
